I am a long time user of Carbon Copy Cloner, but with Monterey on my new MacBook Pro M1Pro I have had the same problem, as you all, to make a bootable backup.įinally I have solved the problem quite easily.ĭo not ask me why, but this program can make a bootable disk with Monterey installed! (Actually I still do.part of backup strategy) In the past when I did depend on my computer for work, I always had a second machine I could turn to immediately. Unless you intend to permanently boot from the clone it is only a temporary situation, until you reinstall and migrate, or clone back to the internal. Lots of signing in and re syncing to do, and usually a few other problems to resolve. However I used to test bootable clones, and it was never "five minutes". I do not rely on my computer for work any more, so being up and running in five minutes after an internal drive problem is not necessary for me. I have done several test restores and one real one from TM and they have all been successful.
I am not sure exactly when or the cause, probably the change to APFS. I always preferred to use a clone to migrate from, although I still did occasional tests with TM.īut my experience is that TM migrations have much improved in the last year or two. My experience of whole drive restore from a Time Machine backup was similarly poor for many years. Regarding Time Machine, Never Again! I won't even use it for data backups. It's a shame that Apple has essentially killed bootable clones. At the worst I had to spend around 30 minutes reconfiguring some preferences. On the other hand, in the past 15+ years I have used clones made using SuperDuper many times to migrate everything and I never had a serious problem. None of my third-party apps were transferred so I had to spend a lot of time reinstalling everything. The only time I tried using Time Machine to migrate data was when I upgraded from Mojave to Big Sur.

Time Machine also only backs up the Data volume, and the approved way of restoring from a either a Time Machine backup or a CCC backup is to reinstall and migrate.
